Fresh snow on the Mont Blanc massif above Chamonix
Lift passes, lessons and the drive up

Pick the mountain, the grade and the day. The skiing is booked before you land.

What a lift pass costs in Bansko and what it costs in Zermatt. Whether the Gudauri run out of Tbilisi is worth eleven hours in a minibus. Which first lesson has you on a real slope by the afternoon. Reviews of the ski days people actually book.

Where the snow is

Six ski countries, and the day out worth building a trip around in each.

Alpine Switzerland and Arctic Finland at one end, Bulgaria and Georgia at the price end, and Korea and the Emirates doing something else entirely with snow.

Switzerland

Switzerland sells the same mountain four different ways.

Zermatt, Verbier, Grindelwald and the Titlis slopes above Lucerne. What separates the options is rarely the snow. It is who is standing next to you, and what the hour costs.

What it costs

What a day on snow costs, from Bansko to Zermatt.

Every priced review sorted into three brackets. Where you ski moves the number far more than how long you ski for.

Under $50

Bulgarian and Georgian lessons, ski hire by the day, and the Korean resort runs out of Seoul.

$50–150

Indoor session passes, Lapland cross-country days and most of the guided resort trips.

$150 and up

Alpine private instruction, multi-day packages and the Japanese resort tours.

Not a chairlift

Three ways of skiing that never touch a piste map.

Lift-served snow is one answer. Arctic track in the dark, a refrigerated hall in the desert and a pair of skinny skis on a frozen lake are three others.

Above the circle

Lapland and the Arctic

North of the Arctic Circle the season runs November to May and the light does most of the work. Around the solstice the sun never properly clears the horizon, so the tracks go blue for a couple of hours and then run on headtorches. Rovaniemi and Tromso are the two bases with enough operators to book a day at short notice.

Snow on demand

Skiing indoors

A refrigerated hall holds its slope near minus four whatever the month, which is why the Emirates and Norway both built one. The runs are short and the lift is a rope tow or a stub chair, so an hour is a session rather than a day. It is also the cheapest place on earth to find out whether you like the feeling.

Skinny skis

Cross-country

Nordic skis are narrow, the heel is loose and the effort is yours rather than the mountain’s. Finland and Norway groom hundreds of kilometres of track and hire the kit at the trailhead. Beginners cover more ground in a morning than they expect, because none of it needs a slope.

Before you book

Four things about skiing that make the booking decision for you.

Snow is seasonal, the hemispheres disagree about when, and the price on the button rarely covers everything you need to stand up. These four come up on almost every ski booking.

  1. 01Valle Nevado and Farellones Ski-Center Day TripThe Andes run June to September. A Chilean ski day booked for January is a summer mountain with nothing on it.
  2. 022-Hour or Full-Day Slope Session at Ski DubaiIndoor slopes are the only ones that do not care what month it is. Sessions are sold by the hour, and the busy ones go at weekends.
  3. 03Ski and Snowboard equipment rental in BanskoSkis, boots and the lift pass are often three separate line items. Check which of them the price covers before you compare two days.
  4. 04Private Ski Lessons – 3 hours ZermattPrivate instruction is quoted for the whole party rather than per head. Two of you halves it, four quarters it.
Skis, boots, poles

Hiring ski kit is the part people forget to price.

A week of skis and boots in Borovets costs less than one afternoon of them in Whistler. The rental counter also decides how long your first morning takes, so book the fitting alongside the lesson.
